J'écris des portraits d'hommes et de femmes dont la vie a été bouleversée par l'histoire. I write portraits of men and women whose lives have been upended by history.

Je m'intéresse aux personnes confrontées à la disparition d'un pays, à la guerre, à l'exil, à l'apparition de nouvelles frontières ou à l'effondrement d'un monde auquel elles pensaient appartenir pour toujours. À celles dont les récits permettent de comprendre, à hauteur d'individu, ce que les grands événements produisent dans une existence. I am drawn to people confronted with the disappearance of a country, with war, with exile, with the appearance of new borders, or with the collapse of a world they thought they would always belong to — people whose stories help us understand, at the human scale, what great historical events do to a life.

J'aime partir d'un objet, d'une photographie ou d'un souvenir pour remonter le fil d'une vie. Une vieille photo, un document conservé depuis des années, un objet rapporté d'un autre pays ou un simple souvenir deviennent souvent la porte d'entrée vers une histoire beaucoup plus vaste. I like to start from an object, a photograph, or a memory and follow the thread of a life. An old photo, a document kept for years, an object brought back from another country, or a simple memory often become the doorway into a much larger story.

Ma démarche est simple : aller à la rencontre, écouter longuement et restituer au plus près ce que les gens ont bien voulu me confier. My approach is simple: meet people, listen at length, and render as faithfully as possible what they have chosen to share with me.

Après plusieurs mois de voyage au Kirghizstan, en Ouzbékistan, au Tadjikistan et au Kazakhstan, j'ai écrit Après l'Union. Portraits d'Asie centrale, consacré aux mémoires de la disparition de l'Union soviétique. After several months of travel in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan, I wrote After the Union. Central Asian portraits, devoted to the memories of the fall of the Soviet Union.

Je travaille aujourd'hui sur un nouveau projet : Loin de Kaboul. Portraits d'un pays en exil, consacré aux Afghans vivant en France. I am currently working on a new project: Far from Kabul. Portraits of an exiled country, devoted to Afghans living in France.
